NEW LONDON, Conn (WTNH) —- The Thames River Detachment Marine Corps League will be hosting another annual toy drive for the holidays.

According to the Thames River Detachment Marine Corps League, the Toys for Tots campaign kick-off party will take place tomorrow, November 1st, at 2:00 pm at Mike’s Famous Harley-Davidson which is located at 951 Bank Street in New London.

The purpose of this Toy drive is to give less fortunate children throughout the United States the ability to experience the joy of Christmas. Toys for Tots also seeks to invest in children, unite community members, and to build better communities. The toy drive has been a huge societal inspiration. In just 2015 almost 2,000 children, 49 non-profits, and 12 veteran families were helped from these efforts. A total of $24,310 was raised and the Marine Corps League was able to distribute 11,916 toys.

This will be the third year that Mike’s Famous has served as the region’s intake, staging, and distributing center for the campaign. But other organizations have also sponsored the event like Crystal Mall, Cross Road Rent-A-Space, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Macys in Waterford, and A.C. Moore in New London. Mike’s Famous Harley-Davidson was the 2015 recipient of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut’s Military community support award for its outstanding commitment to supporting active military members and veterans.
