New Haven police investigating fatal crash on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–New Haven police are investigating a crash that left 58-year-old Manuel Bonilla-Torres dead Friday night. The incident happened at around 9:54 p.m. on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard between Adeline and Frank Streets.

The driver of the car, 31-year-old Jose Lopez-Morales, phoned 911 reporting he’d struck a man walking in the road.

Lopez-Morales told investigators he was heading southbound on the boulevard when Bonilla-Torres left the curb and walked into his travel lane. He told police he didn’t have the time or distance to stop the car. A witness traveling behind him gave investigators the same account.

Bonilla-Torres was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to investigators, Lopez-Morales was neither intoxicated nor traveling too fast. His license is valid, and the car’s registration and insurance are up to date.

The crash team is waiting for forensic results on the deceased but have thus far concluded the driver is not at fault.
