Police remind parents to check trick-or-treat candy

CLINTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Clinton police continue to investigate candy that was possibly tampered with and given out at Joel School Monster Mash. The fun-size box of “DOTS” candy had been opened and then glued back shut again.

“It kind of breaks your heart,” said Clinton resident Carlos Ortiz. “There’s so much going on our there. It’s hard to figure out how to stop something like that from happening.” When Ortiz heard about it he decided to hand out extra candy on Halloween.

Ortiz added, “I’ve got three buckets inside. We hope we can overcome that situation and give out a whole lot more and make up for that one bad situation.” The School Superintendent told News 8 they haven’t heard of any other cases of tampered candy in Clinton.

David Hartman with the New Haven police department said the number of Halloween tampering cases is very small but it can happen. Hartman said, “You can get a sealer for your home to reseal a plastic package. It’s just a matter of a little bit of heat applied in the right way. So you really have to go over things and make sure to the best of your ability that they are not tampered with.” And before your child digs in Hartman added, “Disregard anything you deem to be suspicious. Disregard anything where the wrapping has come undone or looks like it’s come undone or was resealed.”

It’s important to check the package, as well. As for Ortiz he said he’s looking forward to a safe night. Ortiz added, “Now mothers and fathers and kids they have to watch out where they go and what they do. we can only hope as a community there’s enough people out there overcome that situation and make up for that.”
