NOWALK, Conn. (WTNH) — Is your home in need of an upgrade? One way to take it up a notch is with tile.

“Tile is being used in many more spaces in the home now,” said Nina Bender of Bender in Norwalk. “For an example, in the past you would see a lot of people taking their granite and raising it up maybe three inches and using it as their back-splash to match their counter top. Now people are leaving that strip of granite out and adding in tile to add a form of texture, color, tone. It’s becoming an accent that makes people’s homes pop like never before.”

Gone are the days of your grandma’s bright pink bathroom tile. Today’s tiles trends are tres chic.

“Color is always coming and going but gray white and grayish the combination of the two especially in Connecticut are not going anywhere,” Nina explained. “If anything it’s coming on stronger and stronger, so you’ll see a lot of that in the showroom.

Another trend that’s popping up in homes is 3-D tile, which features a raised texture.

“You really want to work with your Bender designer to figure out where that tile will work best in your home, so for example if you’ve got a tile that’s bumping out and has different textures and tones, maybe an accent of metal, put it around your fire place or a bar backsplash where it’s not getting wet.”

A third big tile trend nowadays is river rock.

“People love putting river rock or pebbles in their showers,” Nina explained.

However, Nina says there’s something to consider if you’re planning on using the natural look.

“A lot of times when you buy it you are getting the full pebble,” she explained. “That can be painful on your feet. We sell a product where the pebble is cut straight in half so you’re getting great installation where it’s flush from the base of the pebble to the floor and also your foot is taking in less of the pebble. Same great look but a lot easier on your feet.”

Another popular tile option today is mosaic.

“Mosaic options can offer such an emotional response from people,” Nina said. “We have this wonderful company, actually hand made in Virginia — New Ravenna. They can take a picture that you’ve taken so and they can replicate it in a mosaic. They are incredible it’s really beautiful.”

So now that you’ve seen how tile can transform your home, it’s time to take it to the next level with the help of Bender. For more information, visit BenderPlumbing.com.
