Ask the Lawyer: Presidential commutations

(WTNH)–On Friday, President Obama granted 72 more commutations for federal inmates, including a New Haven man. Just what is a commutation? We asked New Haven-based attorney Tara Knight as part of our weekly “Ask The Lawyer” segment.

Of course, this wasn’t the first round of commutations President Obama has granted. There have already been hundreds during his presidency. So, what factors does the president consider when deciding whether or not to grant a commutation?
