MADISON, Conn. (WTNH) Most people will never feel ready for that first big snowfall but it will be a little less stressful if you plan now how the snow will get cleared. You don’t want to wait for it to look like a winter wonder land before you start thinking about who’s going to clear the snow from your property. You’ll get the most bang for your buck if you know what to look for.

Madison Earth Care Service’s Bob Blundon says looking for someone who lives near you is best because they know the weather and terrain best. After you’ve narrowed that down,  find out how they charge.

“Is the person charging by the season, charging by the plow or charging by the inch. The most fair is by the inch because then you’re playing for what you get. Season, it’s a gamble, you win or they win, one or the other,”

Once you’re clear on how much it will cost you, make sure you’ll be protected. They should have insurance to protect you and themselves in the event there’s damage to the property. They should also be prepared for extreme conditions.

“You also would like to make sure they have back-up plow or another driver, so if something happens with their one plow or one driver, the guy gets sick, you want to make sure someone is covering for them,” he added.

Find out how you can contact them during off-hours and weekends so you know someone will be there for you when you need additional help. Just like most services, it’s always a red flag if you’re asked to pay cash before services are rendered.
