EAST WINDSOR, Conn. (WTNH) — East Windsor police say that a fire in the trailer park on North Road killed one person, and displaced others, on Sunday night.
Around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday night, an East Windsor officer was westbound on North Road near Route 5 when they noticed smoke rising from the trailer park behind Sofia’s Restaurant at 9 North Road. Police say that after kicking down the front door in an attempt to get inside, the officer was “pushed back by heavy black smoke.”
Joined by the Warehouse Point and Broad Brook Fire Departments, police say that officers and firefighters “made numerous attempts to enter from various sides of the home, but were unsuccessful as the trailer was quickly engulfed in flames.” Those in neighboring trailers were safely evacuated, but after extinguishing the fire, firefighters found that the homeowner had perished. The identity of the individual is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
North Road, or Route 140, was closed between Winkler Road and Route 5 as crews worked, but was reopened by midnight.
Two trailers were damaged in addition to the one that caught fire, and the residents were temporarily displaced.
The investigation is being conducted by East Windsor police, the Warehouse Point Fire Department, the State Fire Marshal, and the State’s Attorney’s Office. Anyone with any relevant information is asked to contact East Windsor police at (860) 292-8240.
