NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A warning tonight as we get close to the holiday shopping season. It looks like there are a number of “fake apps” popping up. Downloading apps is a great way to hear about deals and get special prices while shopping, but don’t be so quick to hit the download button.

The New York Times says counterfeit apps have popped up in abundance in Apple’s App store and they are mostly bona fide apps of luxury-goods makers like Christian Dior or discount store like the Dollar Tree. You could be tricked into entering your credit card number or Facebook login information would could open you up to a slew of security risks.

So here’s what you need to know:

Before downloading anything, pay close attention to the name of the app. Some may look like a name you know but there is a letter missing you may not notice if you look close.

Notice user ratings and reviews. If an app is malicious in some way, it’s likely you’ll see that in the reviews.

Doing a quick internet search on an app can help you determine if it has a bad reputation and if you have time do a little quick research on the app developer. It’s listed right under the name of the app in the app store. A genuine developer will most likely have a website and other valid credentials or accolades out there.
