WALLINGFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Vandals have smashed, broken and cracked more then $35,000 worth of headstones at the Center Street Cemetery over the past couple of years. The cemetery was opened in 1683 and is on the National Historic Registry.
After more ruined headstones were found this week, Councilman John Sullivan says they must take action to stop this from happening again.
“Our forefathers are buried here. This town goes back to 1679 or even earlier than that and we have to put some resources into securing the cemetery,” said Sullivan.
Sullivan wants to bring a proposal before the board that would fund security cameras and locks on the gates. He says it’s time to act and do something about this before vandals ruin the entire cemetery.
“It is more than that, these are historic monuments and you can’t put a dollar value on them. We know what it cost to fix them, but you can’t replace them anymore once they’re gone, they’re gone,” said Sullivan.
Town leaders say the police are taking this very seriously, patrolling the cemetery at night. They may try to add security lights on motion sensors to alert people when someone is at the cemetery trespassing at night. Right now, town leaders say they are closing in on a suspect.
