It is November and the cooler weather has rolled its way into Connecticut. You probably don’t need me to tell you, but as is the case this time of year, the weather is only going to get chillier before it gets warmer.  With the decrease in temperature comes the dreaded increase in energy costs, and for many Connecticut residents the energy bill during the cold season can be downright frightening.  So what can you do to make that energy bill a little less daunting?  Here are some tips:

  • Inspect Insulation – You may not think about it that often, but insulation plays an pivotal role in your home’s energy efficiency.  Upgrading your insulation or replacing damaged areas can do wonders to keep more heat in your home.
  • Install Weatherstripping – An inexpensive way to save energy, weatherstripping is easy to install and comes in a variety of sizes that can be easily customized for the gaps and cracks between your doors and windows.
  • Check the Fireplace – To keep heat from escaping through your chimney, keep your fireplace damper closed when the fireplace is not being used. Also make sure to seal up the cracks around the fireplace hearth with some caulking.
  • Change Furnace Filter – A dirty filter can cause your system to work inefficiently.  Most filters have a 90 day lifespan but it is even more crucial to change your filters in the cold weather season.

With the long winter approaching, fall is a great time to get ahead of the game when it comes to saving energy.  Follow these tips, and I can feel confident forecasting energy savings in your future.
