NEW YORK (AP) — A 5-year-old girl found abandoned inside the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan led police to the girl’s murdered mother in Connecticut and raised questions about the girl’s father.

Officials tell the Daily News Port Authority police found the girl on the second floor concourse just after 10 a.m. Monday.

After conversing with the girl, police went to a Stamford apartment where they found the dead mother, a Guatemalan immigrant from New Jersey who just moved into the apartment.

Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin said they’re looking for the girl’s dad, 32-year-old Elmer Gomez Ruono.

The cause of the death is unclear, but Conklin says the apartment showed signs of a struggle.

Authorities believe the father may have left the girl at the bus terminal.
