Protecting your holiday packages from theft

(WTNH) — The holiday season is here and so are the crooks stealing packages right off of doorsteps.

11-16-package thiefDo you recognize this guy? Vernon police say he stole a package off a porch over the weekend. It’s happening around the state, from the shoreline to Middletown and Meriden.

Lt. William Meyer of the Vernon Police Department says this year is no exception. Holiday shopping seems to be starting earlier and earlier and so do the thieves.

“Either have the package shipped to your work if they allow that, or have it shipped to a trusted family member or friend who is home during the day and can accept the package. Some stores will allow you to pick it up in store,” said Meyer.

Police say in this case, the homeowner had an excellent surveillance system in place. As a matter fact, there are four or five cameras on the premise. He got a great image and they are making headway to make an arrest. Lt. Meyer says it’s buyer beware, you need to make sure you have a system that is high-resolution.

“I just caution, make sure you get a camera system that has a good enough resolution so it will be useful for identification,” said Meyer.

Nest cam, Piper and Canary are some of the units. They cost around $200, but the best tip, just don’t leave the package out in the open.
