PHOENIX (WTNH) —- According to KSAZ, a 17 year old boy who received a strange text message for holiday plans gained himself another grandma.

Many times, text messages from unknown numbers are immediately identified a spam. For 17 year old Jamal Hinton, it was an extra invitation for a festive Thanksgiving celebration.

Jamal Hinton was in class when he received a text message from a woman claiming to be his grandmother stating what time Thanksgiving dinner would be.

I was just in class, and I got a random group chat text, so I texted back, and I found a new grandma.”

When the woman, identified as Wanda Dench, exchanged selfies with Hinton the two knew that the conversation was a minor mix-up. However, Dench decided to still extend the invitation to Hinton. Hinton explains his reasons for attending Thanksgiving dinner with a new family.

I was, like, ‘wow, she is really nice, I should really go’. She seems really sweet. Just a nice lady, I guess”

For Dench, this is not uncommon due to her military background.

Grew up in a military family. May dad is Navy, so we would invite vets over that we didn’t know either for Thanksgiving.”

After the two met on Wednesday, they realized that they have a lot in common like open hearts and minds. However, Hinton did admit that maybe he could teach Dench a few things about texting.
