West Haven High School students get unique acceptance into college

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A big day for seniors at West Haven High School. Today they find out which college they’ll be going to next fall. But the acceptance process is quite different.

“It was really stressful. I didn’t know if I was going to get into any college,” said Alyza Barbieri. Barbieri was all smiles when News 8 caught up with her Friday morning. She was just accepted to Quinnipiac University and WestConn.

“It just fit really well. It’s feels amazing,” said Barbieri.

West Haven High School held it’s second annual College Decision Day on Friday. It’s unique set up. Eight local colleges and universities come in and accept students right on the spot.

“It’s going to feel like a huge weight off my shoulders that it’s all done and over with,” said Samantha D’Amico, a graduating senior.

Before the event, students applied to their schools of choice ahead of time. In order to be accepted they have to meet certain requirements.

“They need to have at least a C+ or B average. They need to have test scores that were goal for the state of Connecticut, they need a solid recommendation and they also needed to write a compelling essay,” said Dr. Rose Paolino, from West Haven High School.

Nearly 70 kids go in one-by-one to meet with representatives from each of the local schools. As you can imagine, nerves were running high.

“I hope that I make a really good impression to them and that I’m a really good fit for their school,” said Senior Destiny Velez.

For many of these students, going to college is a life-changing experience.

“We have some first-generation students in our community and they are just so thankful and their parents are thankful. So how do you not continue something like this,” said Paolino.
