People prepare for expected wintry weather

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — The weather expected for Sunday is certainly something we can handle here in New England, but it’s a reminder that winter will be here soon.

Because of the cold weather in the forecast, hardware stores like Schmidt’s and Serafine’s in Waterbury have been busy as people get ready for it. The store shelves are stocked for winter. Though the store has snow blowers and generators ready, co-owner Beverly Schmidt says that’s not what shoppers are looking for just yet.

“Snow shovels people are picking up here and there. Some ice melt, not so much. More the cold than the snow,” Schmidt said.

Customers were buying heat related items instead. However, many were still thinking about snow. Some of them are looking forward to winter weather.

“I wish it would snow,” said shopper Patricia Pitts. “We need all the water we can get.”

Customer Joyce Kenworthy was preparing for the colder weather. She’ll be moving her plants to keep them safe from the cold.

“I bought two thermometers, one for the porch to see if anything can stay out there and one for the garage to make sure it’s safe down there,” said Kenworthy.

Many customers were still focused on fall as they got ready for winter. They were trying to get rid of their leaves before the colder weather hits. Others were planning ahead. Christmas lights were one of the most popular items on Saturday.

“People are trying to get their Christmas lights up because it’s going to get cold, so they want to do it when they’re in their shorts and their t-shirts,” said Schmidt.
