Police enforce driving safety for holiday travelers

(WTNH)– We’ve got your back this Thanksgiving if you’re driving anywhere over the next couple of days. A lot of people still have miles to travel this holiday weekend.

News 8’s Kent Pierce was on the road Thanksgiving morning in the mobile weather lab with some driving safety reminders. This is the busiest travel weekend of the year. No, we’re not seeing a whole lot of cars out there Thursday morning but Wednesday night was a huge night for law enforcement.

Lots of people come home and meet up with old friends the night before Thanksgiving and have drinks. Reports from Wednesday night were lots of people pulled over for DUI checks all over New Haven.

That’s a big part of what police are doing this weekend. Another part is enforcing speeding, reckless driving, and distracted driving laws. Police are doing that on the ground and in the air. They have a small plane that watches cars, times them to see how fast they’re going, and then they radio down to patrol cars on the ground.

At the same time, there is also a campaign going on right now called Click It or Ticket. That means police are also looking to make sure everyone is wearing their seat belts. Seat belts save close to 13,000 lives every year.

The police just want everybody to get where they’re going safely this holiday weekend. So don’t drink, speed or use your phone. And do make sure you buckle up.
