Would-be robber leaves New Haven store empty-handed, returns to buy candy

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–A Bridgeport man is accused of trying to rob a New Haven store, then returning less than an hour later to buy candy.

Police said 46-year-old George Wilkes tried to rob the 7-Eleven on Foxon Boulevard early Friday morning. He made it seem like he was holding a gun under his shirt, but the clerk realized it was just a stick. Wilkes left, then came back about 45 minutes later.

The clerk said that time, Wilkes said he was just buying candy and not trying again to rob the place.
