WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — Police have arrested the man who they say K9 Thor was chasing when he was injured and died.

Last week, police were called to a motel for a report of a woman being held against her will by her boyfriend, whom she had a protective order against. When police got there, the suspect, 20-year-old Chauncey Smith of Hartford, ran. K9 Officer Thor ran after him.

Two hours later, police found Thor. They say he was hurt and was brought to a veterinarian. Thor died due to the injuries sustained while searching for Smith.

On Monday, Smith was arrested. He was found in a dumpster by Hartford police. He is charged with interfering with police and violation of a protective order. Police say he has not been charged for the death of Thor because that investigation is ongoing.

Thor has served his community for two years. A memorial will be held on December 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wethersfield Community Center, located at 30 Greenfield Street.
