NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A man charged with beating another man in a New London apartment building so severely that the victim eventually died has been held on $200,000 cash bail.

The Day reports that 44-year-old Edgar Sanchez-Valencia was arraigned Tuesday on a second-degree assault charge in connection with the Thanksgiving morning beating of 38-year-old Marlon Beasley. Beasley was found unconscious with facial and head injuries in a fourth-floor hallway at the Williams Park Apartments. He was taken off life support Monday.

The judge says the suspect is likely to face more serious charges in light of Beasley’s death.

According to court documents, Beasley is legally blind and Sanchez-Valencia has epilepsy.

The men had been drinking at a party. The suspect told police he intervened when he thought Beasley was going to hit his girlfriend.
