Woman who was checking on 1-year-old child hit, killed on I-95 South in Old Lyme

(WTNH)–A woman who left her car to check on her one-year-old girl was hit and killed by a tractor trailer on I-95 South on Thursday, according to state police.

31-year-old Ashley Ferguson, of Middletown, was standing near the drivers’ side door when the truck hit her and the driver’s side of the car, which was parked on the right hand side of the road.

The child and another passenger in the car were not hurt.

The accident took place between exits 70 and 71 in Old Lyme around 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

I-95 South was closed for hours following the accident. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to clean up spilled fuel from the tractor trailer.

A separate three-car accident, which happened on I-95 North between exits 75 and 74 in East Lyme at around 3:00 p.m., had further compounded traffic problems in the area. The backup extended into Waterford, which is 11 miles away.
