Bicyclist hit by New London police officer, badly hurt

NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — A New London police cruiser hit and seriously hurt a bicyclist on Sunday afternoon, state police say.

According to authorities, 41-year-old Christopher Petteway, of New London, was riding his bike southbound on Hempstead Street near Thompson Court. A New London police officer responding to a domestic disturbance hit him nearly head-on in a curve just before 4 p.m.

State police say the Brainard Street man was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, then flown to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

The New London police officer was not hurt.

The Connecticut State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is investigating the crash.
