STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– A school employee was taken to the hospital after a chemical spill at a Stamford elementary school on Wednesday morning.

Police confirm to News 8 that the chemical spill temporarily closed Davenport Elementary School, at 1300 Newfield Avenue, to students and staff at around 9 a.m., while officials searched for the source of the strong odor.

The odor was determined to be the result of a spilled cleaning liquid but police say the building is now safe for occupancy.

One employee was taken to Stamford Hospital as a precautionary measure but is expected to be released.

Students either remained on buses or waited at the neighboring Greek Orthodox Church while police investigated the spill. School has since resumed.
