NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for fatally stabbing his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend.
The New Haven Register reports that 43-year-old Carlos Berrios was sentenced Thursday, two months after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the August 2016 death of 50-year-old James Foley.
Prosecutors say Foley had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s house in violation of a protective order and got into an argument with the woman. Foley and the woman had had a long-term relationship and five children together.
Berrios was also at the apartment in violation of a protective order and stabbed Foley after the woman asked for protection.
Foley’s children gave impact statements, calling their father “my savior” and “my protector” who would fix anything in their life that broke.
Berrios apologized to Foley’s family.
