WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH)– A family owned business destroyed on South Main street after an early morning fire. Fire chief with the Waterbury Fire Department David Martin said, “The first companies on scene encountered heavy smoke coming from the building. They made entry. Started to make some progress and conditions got a lot worse.”

No one was in the building when firefighters arrived on scene after 6am. Furniture and mattresses were feeding the flames.

Chief Martin added, “They did make progress for a period of time but being a furniture store there is a heavy fire load in there and once everything got going we did back the guys off for safety reasons.”

The Waterbury fire department used two ladder trucks to fight the fire. Donald Thompson added, “You couldn’t see the smoke, just massive amounts of smoke all over Waterbury.” The property manager told News 8 Discount Mattress is father and son business and has been open for more than 10 years and the owners lost everything.
