Tick known to cause allergic reaction to red meat found in Connecticut

SOUTH NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) — A tick that has a bite known to cause a red meat allergy in humans has been found right here in Connecticut.

DEEP says the Lone Star Tick was found at Manresa Island in South Norwalk.

Experts say the tick is most common in the southeastern United States, but it has been moving north.

The tick’s bite can trigger a life-threatening reaction to red meat. The allergic reaction is caused by a sugar in the meat.

There’s currently no cure for the allergy.
