Stretch Your Dollar: Tips for getting a job for the holidays

(WTNH)– It’s only the first week of fall but retailers are already in holiday hiring plans. We are stretching your dollar with tips on where to look and make yourself stand out.

It may still feel like summer but in the retail world, the holidays are right around the corner. Before long, you’ll be making a list and checking it twice. It’s why the time is now to get a job if you’re looking for work!

Marshall Cooper is a job developer with Workforce Alliance in New Haven and works with ex-offenders getting back on their feet. He says a lot of people are going for the same jobs, so it’s important to stand out immediately with a unique cover letter.

“Maybe things like I worked two jobs at one point, I put myself through school,” said Cooper.

If you get an interview, you have 10 seconds to make a good first impression, so present yourself professionally and avoid this:

“Smoke on their clothes, wearing religious artifacts. Employers think there’s a separation between religion and job offers,” said Cooper.

Lastly, especially if you’re looking for full-time work. Make sure to leave an unforgettable impression.

“Going the extra mile. Doing the little things, coming in early, staying late, volunteering to work on an off-day. And staying busy, not just the minute you do your chore, you’re back on your cell phone five minutes later. Pick up a broom and maybe sweep the place. Put the trash out,” said Cooper.
