KILLINGWORTH, Conn. (WTNH) – Today, we’re Cruisin’ Connecticut to Killingworth, home of the Lavender Pond Farm.
Denise & Chris Salafia had over 70 plants at their old home, and when they moved to the property in Killingworth, Denise was inspired by the story Miss Rumphious.
It’s about a little girl who tells her grandpa that she has to do all of these things. He says that’s nice dear, but there’s a third thing you need to do, what are you going to do to make the world a more beautiful place?
She read the book to her Mom when she was in hospice, and decided that the lavender farm was her way of paying it forward.
It was my opportunity to live up to what my mother had done.
There are over 12 varieties of lavender planted on the farm.
When we harvest the clippings of the plant, there’s a number of things we can do with it. We can distill it. The column is packed with about 60 lbs. of lavender. It’s a high output to get a little bit of oil. That’ll put you right to sleep. It sure does, and that’s why lavender is a proven sleep aid.
That essential oil forms the basis for all of the products in their shop. From soaps, lotions, gels, and shampoos… there’s even a linen spray, so people spray it on their sheets before they go to bed. The property also holds yoga events, weddings and more…
