Ham Radio headquarters in Newington assisting with Puerto Rico relief efforts

NEWINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)–Communication is key right now as people try to help those affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, but without power, that hasn’t been easy.

However, there is one mode of communication that has withstood the strong winds and flooding. That’s the “Ham Radio.”

The dependable medium is headquartered in Newington, Connecticut, at the National Association for Amateur Radio.

Red Cross turned to the NAAR to help with communications, and to help get the word out to potential volunteers.

“Twelve hours after we put out the call for volunteers in Puerto Rico, we had 350 volunteers,” said NAAR spokesman Mike Corey.

The volunteers arrived Thursday in San Juan.

“Some of them are in the military, some are first responders, but every one of them said, I don’t care about the personal sacrifices I have to make, there’s a greater good to do here,” Corey said.
