Democratic Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro called on Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan to allow Congress to take up what she called “commonsense reforms” such as banning assault weapons and supporting federal research into the causes of gun violence.

Democratic Congressman Jim Himes said in a statement, “Almost 5 years after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School took the lives of 26 innocents, including 20 children, an Congress has done nothing. Until we face down the gun lobby and have the spine to take the steps necessary to protect our families, there is blood on our hands and this tragic, terrible story will play out again and again and again and again.”
