BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH) – Bristol native, John Mendonca has had a passion for candle making his whole life. But now he’s creating light for others that can’t see.

So I was driving down the road and I thought it was foggy out. The next morning I was driving and I told my buddy – you gotta drive… and I knew something was wrong.

Mendonca was diagnosed with optic neuropathy – a blockage in blood supply to part of his optic nerve. He is now legally blind, and also diagnosed with M.S. Mendonca works very hard to produce 16 variations of scented candles.

I use all natural soy wax, 100% cotton wick, the glass is even made in the United States. But his dedication for giving back is what’s kept him going. 25 % of the proceeds go to different charities. I’ve been donating to the National Federation for the Blind.

Now Mendonca is able to shine a light of hope for people who need it:

I feel whatever you get out of this life, is based on what you put into it. So this is my way.
