Kayaker found near Norwalk spends 17 hours in Long Island Sound

(WTNH)–An amazing story of survival happened on Long Island Sound over the weekend.

A New York man who capsized while kayaking was found 17 hours later clinging to a Norwalk lighthouse. Michael Diaz drifted more than 8 miles from where he had gone kayaking. He says he was determined to survive.

“I was very much aware of the gravity of the situation,” Diaz said. “I was also aware of the hypothermia and dehydration that would be playing into it. There is a clock running.”

A passing boater spotted Diaz, and called the Coast Guard.

Diaz says he never would have survived if he weren’t wearing a life jacket.
