Yale students win award for “urban canopy” design that will become reality in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–Some new places to hang out and enjoy New Haven are coming in the spring. Two Yale students won a “parklet design competition” held by New Haven Go.

A parklet is a section of sidewalk that can take over parking spaces for things like additional seating and green space. The Yale students who won designed what they call an “urban canopy”, and their design will become reality after the snow melts.

“These five abstracted Main Street trees of New Haven will provide shade with these beautiful designed canopies. Three are the roots coming out that become tables and seating for eating and relaxing,” said Yale student Misha Semenov.

Their urban canopy parklet will be up through next summer, and will come down in November 2018.
