Skate park opens in East Haven

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– East Haven held the official opening Thursday of a brand new skate park.

It’s more than 6,000 square feet and located at the Joseph Melillo Middle School complex. It’s been on the radar of the city for quite some time but a shortage of money and the right location delayed the project for a number of years.

“This project is probably 20 years in the making. When I first elected in 1997 people had been asking for a skate park here in the community. We offer a lot to young people one of the things we didn’t have in surrounding communities was a skate park,” said Mayor Joseph Maturo, (R) East Haven. “We have a better quality of life in our town by having something else for our young people to do.“

In addition to the skate park, a new basketball court was also built. A $200,000 state grant helped to pay for it all.
