(WTNH)– Halloween is right around the corner and by now your kids have likely decided what they want to be. If you haven’t spent the money yet on candy or a costume, we’re stretching your dollar with money-saving tips.
Before you know it, the kids will be dressed up, going house to house for sweet treats. The night can be scary but its impact on your finances doesn’t have to be.
DealNews Consumer Analyst Janice Lieberman says piecing together your own costume rather than buying a pre-packaged one is the easiest way to cut costs.
“Buy some sweatpants for $12 and add-on yourself. Add feathers; make it into a princess or a cat. I think those are the cutest when you see the trick or treaters coming around in their homemade,” said Lieberman.
She says the closer you wait until Halloween, the greater the savings although you risk not finding what you’re looking for. Same goes for decorations and of course everything will be about 80 percent off after Halloween if there’s anything you can get this year for next year.
Another savings opportunity, tweaking the sweets you’re handing out.
“Per child, if you’re serving chocolate, we figured out it’s about 50 cents a kid. If you do hard candies, it’s 30 cents a kid,” said Lieberman.
