NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–A former New Haven-based bankruptcy attorney is now behind bars for admittedly stealing nearly $3.5 million from his clients. A judge on Friday sentenced 70-year-old Peter Ressler of Woodbridge to more than five years in prison.
Investigators said Ressler had several strategies to scheme his clients out of money, including requiring clients who were seeking a Chapter 11 or Chapter 13 reorganization to deposit funds, and said that the money would be held in trust.
Ressler was entrusted with hundreds of thousands of dollars from at least 10 businesses involved with Chapter 11 reorganizations. Instead of holding the money, he used it for other purposes, according to investigators.
He was arrested in 2016, and plead guilty in June to one count of wire fraud, two counts of embezzlement from a bankruptcy estate, and one count of bankruptcy fraud.
