HAMDEN, Conn (WTNH) – One of the nation’s biggest retailers is in hiring mode in Connecticut. Amazon.com is looking to hire new employees. Even though these are only temporary, seasonal jobs, the line was long, and people were hopeful that a job now could lead to something more in the future.
The event drew so many people, they were turning them away. Roy Nixon of New Haven has been practicing his mock interview skills, so he was ready when asked what he could do for Amazon.
“Be a good asset in the company and showcase the skills that I have,” Nixon said.
The job recruitment event went on all morning at the Workforce Alliance American Job Center in Hamden.
“A lot of it is retail associates,” explained Jim Lauber of the Connecticut Department of Labor. “Shipping, receiving, it’s that holiday rush, so a lot of people on the warehouse floor. Maybe some administrative duties, but for the most part, it’s retail, season retail fulfillment.”
The hope is that the some of the people hired as temporary employees for the holidays could then have a leg up on getting permanent jobs when Amazon opens its fulfillment center in North Haven. That is another reason so many folks came here pitching themselves and what they can do.
“Another opportunity to help me and my family,” said Antonio Lucky of New Haven. “The holidays are coming around. Everybody needs a job, you know? But to better myself, better my family, better my community.”
There are at least 3 more job events like this that Amazon is holding over the next two weeks. It helps to arrange an interview appointment ahead of time:
