NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– People who live on Richard street woke up to the scene of a deadly shooting on Tuesday morning.
Police said 28-year old Darrin Norris Winfrey was shot after 11:30 Monday night. Neighbors heard the sound of gunfire.
“One shot. One pop, boom,” said resident Carl D’Agostino.
One man, who did not want to be identified out of fear for his own safety, said crime on Richard Street is out of control.
“I heard the shots, I looked out the window and I seen him lying here,” he said.
Carl D’Agostino said, “There was like many 8 or 9 cop cars, the fire department, the EMTs, then the forensic people came out here taking pictures in the backyard.”
“The neighborhood we are in, you can’t trust anybody. You can’t even get in your car, you might get robbed, might get stabbed, shot. Anything is liable to happen.” said resident Catherine Smith.
“There has been some drug dealing going on but as far as people getting killed it is really unnerving.”
Neighbors said drug dealers trade brazenly on their street.
“I’ve gone over to cars and told people, ‘you can’t park here, you can’t do your drugs here.’ I ran them off of those steps over there because this is our neighborhood,” Smith said.
Less than two weeks ago, a 33-year-old man was shot in the shot in the back in the same neighborhood.
“It’s crazy. It just happened last week too, a kid just got shot on his bike coming through here,” D’Agostino said.
“Twice in the last in a couple of weeks is pretty unnerving because we don’t know really what’s going on,” Smith said.
People said they don’t feel safe.
D’Agostino added, “I’m not coming out at night time, that’s for sure, because it’s been getting crazy at night.”
