Winstead shooting suspect arrested in Maine

WINSTEAD, Conn. (WTNH) — A man who police say shot a woman in January and fled the state has been brought into custody.

According to Connecticut State Police, On Jan. 19 around 10:30 p.m., 19-year-old Rafael Santiago-Salazar of Waterbury shot 37-year-old Melvin Ashe in the upper chest at 20 Rock Street in Winstead.

Police say Santiago-Salazar fled the scene. The woman was flown to a local hospital for treatment via Life Star.

On Wednesday morning, detectives took custody of Santiago-Salazar in Machias, Maine. He was transported back to state police where he was formally charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, Assault in the 1st Degree, and other related charges.

Santiago-Salazar is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. He is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.
