BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH)–Trick or treating is just a few days away, but police warn a sexual predator might be much closer. In fact, there could be one on your street or just a few blocks away.
“Certainly you want to make sure that the houses you are going to are safe, and in a community like Branford, most all of our neighborhoods are safe, but there are those few scattered people that may have had some tainted past, and if they’ve been involved with a sexual abuse case, and been convicted they’re going to be up on the sex offender registry,” said Captain Geoffrey Morgan.
With just a couple of clicks, you can be better prepared this Halloween, to know which doors you should knock on, and which ones you shouldn’t.
You can go and search the sex offender registry. After a few screens, you’ll be prompted to a page where you can search by address or town.

Branford Police have some other tips for trick or treaters.
Make sure young children head out with an adult. They say older kids like preteens or teenagers should trick or treat in groups. Use sidewalks whenever you can, and wear reflective or bright costumes. Also, never enter the house of someone you don’t know.
Police say that if you have to be out on the roads on Halloween night, remember that the night is all about kids. Make sure to drive slow and be alert.
“We’re predominantly riding around with our cruise lights on reminding motorists to slow down. You know, take some extra time when you’re maneuvering through,” said Morgan.
