Race for mayor heating up in New Britain

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Republican Erin Stewart, the youngest mayor ever in the history of New Britain at 30-years-old is seeking her second second term against Democrat Merrill Gay.

Stewart went to cast her vote early in morning and then continued on the campaign trail from polling place to polling place.

Her opponent, Merrill Gay, had the support of unions rallying outside the polling place. Both sides ramped up efforts with only a couple hours left on the voting clock.

“I like what she has done and how much she has done for New Britain,” explained resident Lynn Dizney. “She is revitalizing downtown getting some of the buildings redone and stuff like that so it looks a lot better.”

“I don’t think Erin did a bad job,” said resident David O’Brien. “I am more interested in getting the Democrats from the ground route up and building that support system so we can make a change on the national level.”
