ORANGE, Conn. (WTNH) — Eighty percent of adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. But there’s a way to fix the problem without medications, injections or even surgery.
Last year, Scott Lavesque was lifting boxes when he felt something pop.
“Severe lower back pain,” Scott said he felt. “I had pain all the way down to my ankle.”
“He was unable to do daily functions,” recalled Scott’s wife Michelle. “He couldn’t put his sock on, he couldn’t even lift his knee up off the bed without being in excruciating pain.”
Thinking there were no other options, the 59-year-old scheduled surgery.
“Most of these patients who’ve had back operations now need a second operation and then a third and then they go to pain management again and it becomes this spiral where they never get out of it,” explained Richard Carpenos, D.C., of New England Spine and Disc in Orange, Conn.
Thankfully Dr. Carpenos told Scott he could eliminate the pain without going under the knife.
“The big thing that we do is non-surgical spinal decompression on the DRX 9000,” Dr. Carpenos said.
The device draws apart the discs in Scott’s back, relieving pressure on the nerves.
“Over time, say a couple of times a week for maybe 12 weeks or so, that disc goes back to a more normal condition,” explained Dr. Carpenos.
“It’s comfortable,” Scott said. “There’s no pain at all. I’ve fallen asleep a few times actually.”
Next Scott receives laser therapy which helps his injured cells regenerate five times faster than they normally do.
“So that’s how we heal the disc,” Dr. Carpenos said. “Also that laser closes down the pain gates, it oxygenates the blood, it reduces inflammation.”
“It feels like somebody’s massaging the muscle,” Scott described. “It feels really good.”
Scott wraps up his visit with an osteopathic session.
“The table lengthens out and then I can flex open each joint and that’s how we restore the motion to the patient and get them to the point where they can do things without pain,” Dr. Carpenos said.
Thanks to Dr. Carpenos, Scott’s pain has diminished greatly.
“You know my pain level was 9-10, now [it’s a] 3-4,” Scott explained.
“I could see him slowly changing for the better, mentally and physically,” Michelle said.
“I have confidence that I’ll get back and surgery will not be an option for me,” Scott added.
Right now Dr. Carpenos currently has a special offer: Two free visits that include both non-surgical spinal decompression and a class 4 laser treatment. To learn more call 1-800-PAIN-FREE or visit NewEnglandSpineAndDisc.com.
