NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) — Lighting is often overlooked but one of the easiest and most effective ways to update your home. The Bender showroom in Norwalk is filled with endless options that are sure to wow your holiday guests.
“Lighting can totally change the way that you view a room and that guests in your home view that space,” explained Nina Bender, of the fourth-generation family run company Bender.
One of the first impressions your guests will have of your home is the entryway.
“So you want something that lights up the entire day something that really becomes that show stopper,” Nina said.
You can’t go wrong with the Constellation Candelabra, what she calls the “showstopper of all showstoppers.” The piece was inspired by the Lincoln Center Metropolitan Opera House.
“The Constellation chandelier puts off this opulence that cannot be achieved by any other fixture,” Nina explained.
When it comes to picking a light for the entryway, draw from the inspiration around you.
“The holidays are such an inspirational time in terms of design and creating an aesthetic that really creates an emotion,” Nina said.
In the home I visited, the homeowner chose the Spur Grand Chandalier for that very reason.
“When you look at it, you might see a snowflake in the middle of winter, you might see a sparkling beautiful Christmas tree,” Nina said.
In the dining room, choose a fixture to help set the mood.
“The Tiffany Collection is really fun,” Nina said. “It’s curved pieces of chrome with integrated crystal beads throughout it so it totally sparkles no matter what setting you’ve got it on. If it’s dim or bright, you’re going to have such a beautiful mood. It’s really the life of the party.”
Lighting is especially important in the kitchen, the place where everyone congregates.
“So you want something above you to sparkle and really light up the entire space,” Nina explained. “In this particular home you’ve got a really traditional white marble New England kitchen so the homeowner wanted something a little bit industrial but also organic to contrast and compliment that classic New England look.”
And for a light that will go just about anywhere, consider the Magro by American Brass and Crystal.
“One of the really cool things about this company is that they hand pick the raw brass and the hand cut crystal, combine them to make an incredibly unique piece,” Nina explained. “You can put it in your entryway, you can put it in your bedroom, in the dining room. Wherever you think this aesthetic fits your needs, that’s where it can go.”
Nina says dimmers are also key, especially in the dining room. They can help you can set the mood when you’re eating or brighten up the table so you can do holiday crafts.
