New Haven man arrested in Hamden burglaries, assault

Ernest Snow (Hamden Police)

HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)– A New Haven man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman during a burglary in Hamden on Friday night.

Police say at around 10 p.m., officers responded to a three story residence on Walden Street for a burglary in progress. An investigation revealed that after hearing noises in the common hallway, a resident saw a man, later identified as 56-year-old Ernest Snow, take clothing that she had left outside her front door.

About a half hour later, police were then called to a home on Whitney Avenue for another burglary in progress. It was determined that Snow had forced his way into that residence, through a rear door and once inside, proceeded to the third floor.

According to officers, the third floor resident was on the phone with police, when she had to use her arms and legs to push back against Snow’s attempt to force his way through the door. Snow was able to get the door open a few inches and grab the 52-year-old victim’s hands. The woman suffered a wrist and back injury.

Moments later, officers found Snow in the vicinity of Dixwell Avenue and Connolly Parkway. A subsequent search of him also led to the discovery of burglary tools.

Snow was charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, assault and larceny.
