EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Police say a protective order is now in effect against an East Haven man who is facing charges for allegedly assaulting his mother and running into a church.

According to police, on Tuesday afternoon, 34-year-old Ryan Champlin was in an argument with his mother and struck her several times with a cordless phone. Champlin then allegedly fled the scene and hid at Old Stone Church.

Later that day, authorities located Champlin inside of an office at the church and arrested him.

Officials say the protective order bars Champlin from contacting his mother and keeps him from entering the residence where he lived with her.

According to police, Champlin’s mother has been discharged from the hospital and is resting at home.

Champlin has been charged with Assault in the Second Degree, Interfering with an Emergency Call, Disorderly Conduct, and Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree.
