Staying fit and healthy during the winter months

(WTNH) — The cold weather can leave many people feeling unmotivated to get moving. Sports Medicine Surgeon Dr. Karen Sutton talks about ways you can shake up your fitness routine in the winter months.

Dr. Sutton says when it comes to exercise in the winter, planning is key. Take a minute to think about your work out plan. Make sure you schedule time to warm up inside before your workout, and cool down when you’re finished.

Warming up and cooling down helps prevent injuries. Dr. Sutton says to warm up, you can try running in place or doing some jumping jacks. If you were doing a high intensity work out, make sure you do something low intensity like walking, to cool down.

Dr. Sutton suggests, if you are going to exercise outdoors, make sure you dress appropriately. Be sure to wear wool and synthetic layers to protect your from the dangerous temperatures.
