At The Movies – ‘Winchester’

(WTNH)– There’s only one major release this weekend but it has a really interesting local tie. No, it’s not the Keith Kountz story. Idris Elba hasn’t said yes to starring in that yet. It’s ‘Winchester,’ starring the great Helen Mirren.  And, yeah, it’s that Winchester: The Repeating Arms, based right here in Connecticut for so many years.

The movie is about Sarah Winchester, Mirren, born right here in New Haven, married to the only Winchester heir. And she just might have lost her mind after he died, spending some forty years having a sprawling mansion built in San Jose, California and a lot of money to do so.

Did she really believe the souls of the people killed by the rifles Winchester made were haunting her? The movie suggests yes, and its directors, the guys behind the most recent ‘Saw’ movie, do a darn good job with the jumps. Especially thanks to the camera bobbing and weaving through this house that’s a maze, and Mirren’s stoic, foreboding gaze. Her expression in the movie poster alone freaks me out.

The house remains a tourist destination in Cali, and the movie theater should be your destination this weekend if you’re up for some scares.
