NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– It won’t be long before your children will be on February break. That can be a long week for parents trying to find something for the kids to do! So all this week we are going to be helping you stretch your dollar on free or inexpensive ideas, starting Monday with a few gems right in our community.

From snow days to winter breaks, it’s not easy to keep kids entertained when the weather keeps you indoors.

Hamden’s Sara Wilkinson is always looking for ways to keep her little ones busy.

“We like to get out and it’s hard in the winter time when winter lasts a long time here,” said Wilkinson.

It’s why we talked to Parenting Coach Chrissy Khachane to get some ideas! The first place she turns to?

“We have a wonderful library system that allows parents to come take classes absolutely free and they have many activities for kids during the week from singing to story time to craft activities,” said Khachane.

Many people don’t realize you can also take out free movies or baking pans to try something new at home.

Another idea, our local museums, take the family to the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

“My boys love animals and nature,” said  Wilkinson.

Kids under 3 are always free there and everyone’s free Thursday afternoons.

You don’t have to have kids to enjoy this one. There are also adult classes and free museum tours where you can see a whole lot more than what’s on display at the museum itself.

Or get the kids building at the Eli Whitney Museum. They’re gems in our community that will not only entertained but also keep your kids learning.

It’s a great way to enjoy New Haven and all it has to offer without breaking the bank.
