(ABC News) — The first full day of competition at South Korea 2018 ended without any medals for Team USA.

Americans failed to take home any in speed skating, biathlon, ski jumping, and cross country.

There have been disappointments. Curling brother and sister team Matt and Becca Hamilton lost again, this time to China. Now at 1-5 it’s looking highly unlikely they’ll make it to the next round.

But for 18-year-old short track speed skater Maame Biney, things are much more optimistic. Biney finished second in her heat to advance to the 500 meter quarterfinals.

On the men’s side, three-time Olympic medalist J.R. Celski failed to qualify for the final in the 1,500, but has two races left to add to his medal total.

Vice President Mike Pence made an appearance at the short track event while sitting next to South Korean President Moon Jae-in. After watching a few heats, Pence headed back to Washington.

There was also a historic moment with the drop of a puck. The first Olympic hockey game featuring Korea’s mixed women’s hockey team took place with players from both North and South Korea. It was a North Korean who almost put her team in front early, but Switzerland won easily 8-0 .
