Police say at 12:10 a.m., officers responded to a complaint of a car fire at 4 Crescent Street, where they found a 1999 Honda Accord fully engulfed in flames in the driveway. The car was within 10 feet of the home and caused an evacuation of four homes in the area.
Firefighters were called to the scene and extinguished the fire before it could spread to the homes.
After an investigation, officers learned that the fire was set by 32-year-old Orlando Velez after he had an argument with his girlfriend and she asked him to the leave their home. Velez owned the Honda and used his own clothes, packed up by his girlfriend, to start the fire.
Officers and a police K-9 found Velez hiding in a backyard on Howard Avenue where he was taken into custody and allegedly confessed to starting the fire after the argument.
Velez was charged with arson and reckless endangerment. He was held on a $100,000 bond.
