EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — This year’s queen of the New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade is an accomplished athlete with a passion for teaching kids.  News 8 caught up with her and the New Haven Gaelic Football and Hurling Club.

She calls herself “The Football Queen”.  Bridget Judd has been playing Gaelic Football since she was young.  It’s a sport that’s taken her to Ireland…and helps her feel connected to her culture.

Judd was crowned parade queen in early February.

“It was surreal. An emotional moment,” recalled Judd.  “It was always something I looked up to since I was a little girl – being on the Gaelic football team, I always walked in the parade and thought, ‘That’s an awesome thing to.'”

The 22-year-old graduated with honors from Albertus Magnus College and is now a literacy para-professional in a Branford school.

“I love working with kids,” said Judd.

Judd has dedicated herself to coaching children and hopes to inspire young parade go-ers to work hard, dream big and be true to themselves.

“Definitely being heavily involved in athletics…makes me who I am which I love,” she said.

Judd has experienced exciting times on the field and can’t wait to reach another goal on March 11th at the historic parade.

“I don’t have any expectations except to enjoy myself,” said Judd.  “I just want to enjoy the moment.”
